Admissions Summary

The admission procedure involves both the parent(s) and child coming to view the school and meeting with school staff. Following this initial meeting each child will be invited to join the other students at the school for a one week period, this will allow all parties concerned to assess both the suitability of the student for the school and the school for the student. Having completed this review week at the school the parent(s) will again meet with school staff to discuss the suitability of Red Rose School for their child. At this stage a conditional offer may be made to the parent(s) of a place at Red Rose School for their child.

Once a place has been conditionally offered, parents are sent two copies of the school’s Terms and Conditions, one copy of which is to be signed acknowledging acceptance both of a place at the school for their child and also of the Terms and Conditions. This should be returned to the school as soon as possible so that the admissions process can progress.

If parents wish to proceed with entry, they will be asked to complete an Application Form and pay a small holding deposit.

At this stage parents will also receive a copy of the Parents Handbook giving information about the following;

  • Daily Routines
  • Academic Matters
  • Uniform
  • Absence Routines
  • Discipline
  • Communication
  • Activities and Events
  • Health Matters
  • Care of Property

Prior to any child starting at Red Rose School an up to date psychological/educational/clinical assessment report, copy of the child’s statement and last statement review, and previous school reports will be required. A child will not be allowed to attend the school until these documents have been received. Red Rose School will also ask for authorisation to contact the child’s previous school to discuss the child’s previous progress and attainment needs.

Once all documents have been received along with the initial fees due, a start date for a child will then be confirmed with parents.

Once the child has been accepted, parents will be asked to keep in close contact with Red Rose School to ensure that the child’s transition to their new school is a smooth one.

Red Rose School will not accept a child from another independent school unless the desired notice has been given at that school and all financial obligations have been fulfilled.

Children may be admitted to Red Rose School at any time during the academic year. However, an exception to this is made when an application for a September place is made during the summer holiday period. In this instance, with all schools on holiday, it is not possible to assess a prospective student fully or to obtain the necessary information from previous schools. Any such application would be considered at the start of the new term.

Fees

The operation of any specialist educational school with such a high staff/pupil ratio will be reflected in comparatively high fees. Due to the differing educational and social needs of each student Red Rose School does not have a formal fee structure and will provide parents with precise fee once the individual educational and social needs of their child have been assessed and agreed with the parent(s).

At present all pupils at Red Rose School are funded by the Cardiff County Council Local Education Authority. Cardiff County Council LEA in agreeing to fund the placement of these children at Red Rose School showed that they had regard to the general principle that pupils are to be educated in accordance with the wishes of their parents, so far as that is compatible with the provision of efficient instruction and training and the avoidance of unreasonable public expenditure [Education Act 1996].

Bursaries

Red Rose School is committed to broadening access to the school by offering to eligible parents means-tested financial support with the payment of schools fees. The school is able to offer a limited number of bursaries. These are available to pupils who would benefit from a Red Rose education but whose parents are unable to meet the full fees. There is a sliding scale of contributions towards the fees and applicants are required to complete a financial circumstances form, which is reviewed each year. This form is confidential to the Headteacher and Bursar.
